Up In Smoke

These are photographs of smoke. The colour is added by heat-mapping colour to tones in post-processing. The shapes the smoke twists itself into as it reacts to the eddies in the air created by my hands is fascinating. It weighs so little that even moving towards or away from the smoke during photographing created high and low pressure that would throw the smoke all over the place. It's like putting dye into the air and watching what it does all around you invisibly all the time.

Music Night

A good friend of mine arranged a music night in Lancashire. She's only eighteen but she managed to get it all arranged herself. Naturally, I took my camera along and after singing a couple of songs myself got a few shots of the other acts.

2012 Liverpool Marathon

Liverpool is a great city. The people love to come out and share a communal experience. That's what makes its football clubs so special, it's why Royal de Luxe's La Princess and Sea Odyssey spectaculars were so successful here. It is this attitude that makes RunLiverpool's runs such great events in the city.

RunLiverpool is a genuine, family-oriented company that fights bureaucracy and practical obstacles to make several runs a year possible in the city. They're a pleasure to work with. Below is a selection of some of my personal favourite photographs taken as one of the official photographers for the marathon.

Al Capone

The Chicago Tribune has just released these old photographs of Al Capone taken during his trial for tax evasion in 1931. (click the title for the link)

I love old photographs like this. They give you a glimpse back into a world long gone. I love looking at the people's expressions and wondering who they were. I also love looking into the back of the photos at the onlookers for whom this photograph was just 1/100th second of their day, 80 years ago. For some, it is perhaps the only visual record of their faces and there may be nobody alive who knows who they are.
